Boston Events

Bostonians are deservedly proud of their local culture and heritage and this is expressed in a number of annual Boston events. There is something for everyone, young and old throughout the year, set against the backdrop of an elegant city. These events are an important part of the economy, attracting visitors to the area.

Keen gardeners are catered for with the New England Spring Flower and Garden Show, held in March. This is a long established event, run by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. There are five acres of beautiful, landscaped gardens and flower displays.

Running enthusiasts descend on the city in their thousands during the month of April, to take part in the Boston Marathon. It's been going for more than a hundred years and is one of the most popular marathons in the world. It is very well supported and spectators cheer loudly for the athletes.

The Harborfest takes place on the Waterfront in the days leading up to Independence Day. This is one of the great family Boston events with a re-enactment of the famous Boston Tea Party, fireworks displays and concerts. The city restaurants compete in a Chowderfest competition during the event. The official Fourth of July celebrations take place at the Esplanade with the world famous Boston Pops Orchestra providing the entertainment, along with more fireworks and noisy accompaniment from bells and the firing of canons.

Classical music fans will enjoy the Boston Early Music Festival and Exhibition, held in June every other year (odd years), with exhibits and concerts. Another music form is celebrated in September, when the Boston Blues Festival invites some of the greatest blues performers to the Esplanade.

Jazz is celebrated too in this month at the Bean Town Jazz Festival with free admission to hear some terrific music over two days. The Boston Film Festival, also in September, has built a reputation as one of the best Boston events with many exhibited films going on to win major awards. The festival shows shorts, feature films and student entries.

A taste of Germany comes to the city in October with the Harvard Square Oktoberfest. There are food and beer stalls from around the world with live concerts and entertainment for the children, including face painting, clowns and rides. These are just some of the Boston events on the city calendar. Boston, with its many Irish citizens of course, would not be the same without its Saint Patrick's Day Parade, when the shamrock reigns supreme.
